Senior Center Custodian-Part Time

Department: Senior Services
Location: KIngs Mountain, NC

General Statement of Duties
Performs routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in building maintenance.

Distinguishing Features of the Class
Employees in this class perform manual labor involving a variety of building maintenance tasks. Work involves the use of light equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, mops, and brooms. Work includes cleaning floors, windows, bathrooms, simple bulbs and fixtures, tables and chairs, and other routine building maintenance. The employees are subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and chemicals. Work is performed under supervision of a higher-level supervisor and is evaluated through observation and inspection to determine the thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties.


Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Hours of employment will be 1:00-5:00pm to assist in the cleaning and closing of the building. Some additional work hours may apply during special and seasonal activities.
  • Clean building; vacuum, mop, sweep, dust, clean restrooms and restroom fixtures, clean windows and woodwork, shampoo carpet buff and wax floors.
  • Empty trash.
  • Stock restrooms with paper products such as towels and tissue; stocks soap
  • Replace light bulbs.
  • Perform a variety of tasks such as removing leaves and debris and cleaning sidewalks and areas around buildings.
  • Operate equipment such as floor waxers, vacuum cleaners, leaf blower, etc.
  • Maintain necessary inventory of cleaning supplies.
  • Cleans department vehicles as needed.

Additional Job Duties

  • Unlocks and locks buildings; transports materials to and from buildings.
  • Sets up rooms for various meetings and activities.
  • Performs related duties as required and as directed by the Aging Program Director.
  • Works with staff to order needed inventory.
  • Manages storage areas to make sure all items are stocked appropriately.
  • Works with safety officer to make sure we are meeting OSHA guidelines.
  • Completes monthly safety inspection report with staff.
  • Completes monthly fire extinguisher inspection report.
  • Helps to coordinate various job duties of custodial staff with director.
  • Trains new custodial staff.
  • Makes sure vehicles are fueled for events and takes to Public Works for maintenance.
  • Coordinates early entry of groups to building for special events, maintenance, and cleaning needs.

Working knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in unskilled manual labor and custodial work.

  • Working knowledge of the standard practices, material, tools, and equipment utilized in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.
  • Working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member, work productively without close supervision, and respond courteously to citizens and employees
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, feeling, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pound of force occasionally; 20 pounds of force frequently; and 10 pounds constantly. Must be able to set up and move tables. Must be able to move and lift chairs. Must be able to lift large trash bags and place in the dumpster.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate light equipment such as floor waxers and vacuum cleaners and to review work for cleanliness and thoroughness.

Desirable Education and Experience
It is imperative that employee be able to read and write proficiently. Any combination of education and experience that produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.

Special Requirement
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
