Custodian -- Part Time

Department: Public Works
Location: Kings Mountain, NC

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Performs routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual janitorial, custodial, and security tasks in support of an organizational unit of the City.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs manual labor involving a variety of janitorial and custodial tasks. Employee cleans floors, windows, bathrooms, surfaces, appliances, and furniture, empties refuse receptacles and picks up refuse outside. Work involves the use of light equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, mops, and brooms. Work is performed under supervision of the Public Works Director and is evaluated on the basis of attainment of individual and divisional goals, cleanliness of the workspace, ensuring proactive and responsive customer service, and compliance with safety regulations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Cleans buildings; vacuums, mops, sweeps, dusts, cleans restrooms and restroom fixtures, cleans windows, woodwork and empties trash.

• Keep appliances, surfaces, tables, and chairs clean.

• Stocks restrooms with paper products such as towels and tissue; stocks soap.

• Maintains necessary inventory of paper products, cleaning supplies and labels chemicals with MSDS labels that are provided.

• Secures building after work is completed.

• Walks assigned City properties and picks up refuse, sweeps, or rakes areas as needed.

• Operates a City vehicle to run errands as needed.

• Performs additional related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in unskilled manual labor and custodial work.

• Knowledge of the standard practices, material, tools, and equipment utilized in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.

• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with assigned work.

• Skill in the use and maintenance of custodial equipment and cleaning tools.

• Ability to work productively without close supervision.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, department heads, government officials, City employees, and contractors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Graduation from high school, or possession of General Education Diploma (GED).

• 1 year of experience in a custodial, janitorial, or general maintenance work is preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties may be considered.

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Inspects and oversees fleet crews under the guidance of the Fleet Services Supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, exposing the employee to varying weather conditions including extreme heat and cold. Duties involve potential exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, dirt, debris, and fumes from cleaning agents and equipment. The employee may work around operating mechanical equipment and is subject to moderate to high noise levels at times. Work requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting for extended periods and may involve slippery surfaces, uneven terrain, or high-traffic areas.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

• Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

• Must possess visual acuity to operate light equipment and to review work for cleanliness and thoroughness . Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Legally eligible to work in the United States.

• Possession of a valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License.

HIRING RANGE

$15.50-19.37 per hour
