GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs responsible semi-skilled work assisting in the repair and maintenance of automotive and specialized equipment at the Citys equipment repair shop.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs preventative maintenance, and diagnosis and repairs on automotive, light and heavy equipment. Duties include the repair of gasoline and diesel engines, motors, brakes, electrical and hydraulic systems, and tires. Emphasis of the work is on maintenance and repair and ensuring work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated on the basis of attainment of individual and divisional goals, ensuring proactive and responsive customer service, and compliance with safety regulations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs scheduled preventive maintenance service on vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to, greasing and changing oil, filters, and other fluids, repairing and replacing tires.
Maintains shop area, including but not limited to, keeps shop clear of discarded materials, sweeps shop floor regularly, cleans and mops offices and restrooms.
Washes assigned garage equipment and vehicles.
Assists with mechanical repairs and overhauls of city equipment as directed such as minor motor repair and parts replacement work.
Assists in the repair of electrical and hydraulic systems and failures, repair and overhaul of brakes including resurfacing of brake drums and rotors.
Assists in the repair of ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies.
Performs road calls to repair or replace tires and other field repair work as directed.
Performs minor welding work.
Performs additional duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles and practices of an automotive repair shop.
Knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair or automotive passenger cars, trucks, and construction equipment.
Knowledge of the characteristics and maintenance needs of a wide variety of automotive and mechanical equipment.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of large-scale shop operations.
Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines and the repair and maintenance characteristics of a variety of earth moving and other construction and special equipment.
Skill in the use of computer and/or portable computer diagnostic equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, department heads, government officials, City employees, and contractors.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports of repairs and service operations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school, or possession of General Education Diploma (GED).
1 year of experience in repairing automotive, construction and specialized equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that includes maintenance and repair of automotive and construction equipment providing the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to adequately perform the essential duties may be considered.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is generally performed in both inside and outside environmental conditions in which the employee is subject to workplace hazards including exposure to operating mechanical equipment creating fumes, odors, and dusts and atmospheric conditions with extreme cold and heat for extended periods of time. Employee is subject to a level of noise requiring workers to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. In addition, the employee is subject to a chance of injury from walking or standing in a construction site. Work involves emergency call-back service.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
Must possess visual acuity to read maps and diagrams; to operate a vehicle; and to read, analyze and prepare reports. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Legally eligible to work in the United States.
Possession of a valid North Carolina Class C Drivers License.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, NC safety inspection license, OSHA Commercial Tire Service Technician certification, OSHA automotive tire service, basic air brake service and basic automotive service training by ASE, within 12 months of employment.
