EQUIPMENT OPERATOR--WATER/WASTEWATER DIVISION
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Performs skilled work in the operation of motorized equipment as well as minor maintenance on same: performs related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. May perform supervisory duties as required by staffing and tasks of section.
TYPICAL TASKS
Operates back-hoe, front-end loader, dozer, boring machine, jet-jet, tractor, trencher, tandem trucks, TV unit, bush hog, and other equipment as assigned; assists in the performance of service and minor maintenance of equipment, supervises others as required; assists with the training of others in the safe and efficient operation of equipment; performs related work, including utility maintenance workers duties, as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the skills and practices of operating, servicing and maintenance of most motorized equipment, safely; thorough understanding of the regulations, safe procedures and limits of the machinery he may be required to operate; ability to understand and follow instructions, written or oral; good physical condition due to need to work the hours necessary in all weather and conditions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or GED and experience in the operation of equipment related to the areas of assignment including some maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to enable the individual to understand and, safely follow instructions of supervisors, written or oral.
Considerable experience in semi-skilled maintenance, construction or repair work related to the work of the department.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or 20 pounds constantly.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate heavy equipment and distinguish details and as well as for safety issues and to read instruction and prepare simple records.
Must be physically capable of operating all involved units of equipment for the amount of time required to complete job,(often more than eight hours) enter/exit shallow ditches, deeper ditches with protective shields/shoring in place, lift tools and/or parts involved in the work and perform a fair share of difficult tasks under less than ideal conditions.
Will be exposed to water, sewage, equipment exhausts and vibration, gasoline and/or diesel fumes, and foul weather, may be exposed to weak chlorine solutions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License with tanker endorsement issued by the State of North Carolina.
Possess or acquire within twelve (12) months a Grade C Distribution System Operator Certification and/or a Grade I Collections System Operator Certification issued by the State North Carolina
Entry Level salary: $15.50/hr
