General Statement of Duties
Operates a variety of medium to heavy equipment performing functions requiring skill and competence.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Employees in this class operate maintenance and construction equipment in tight areas in the maintenance of streets, removal of trash and yard waste, and in landscape maintenance. When not operating equipment, employees work with the crew to repair or maintain sections of streets, sidewalks, curb and gutter, storm drain, street potholes and utility cuts, landscaping, etc. Employees perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs to assigned equipment. Employees are subject to hazards including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, oils, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, tight quarters, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, chemicals, and narrow passage ways. Employees may also be subject to standby and emergency call-back. Work is performed under regular supervision and is reviewed for accuracy, safety, and adherence to established standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
Operates a variety of medium to heavy equipment such as street sweeper, knuckle boom, dump trucks, and tractors with bush hog and other attachments.
Operates knuckle boom to collect and load yard waste, curb side trash, and other items; transports to land fill and dumps.
Loads dirt, stone, and sand on trucks; and remove heavy brush and debris.
Operates equipment in street and pedestrian traffic, around other ground utilities and in other tight places requiring care and skill.
Participates as a crew member in collecting leaves, chipping limbs and collecting trash or yard waste.
Participates in replacing, repairing, installing, fabricating and erecting street signs.
Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance to assigned equipment.
Cleans and washes equipment on a periodic basis.
Reports any unsafe conditions of equipment and other necessary repairs to supervisor.
Works with crew on street maintenance and repair tasks.
Performs landscaping duties along roadside and curbs.
Cuts grass with push and riding mowers, tractors with various attachments and trimmers.
Additional Job Duties
May serve as lead worker with small crew or act in the absence of unit supervisor.
Performs related duties as required.

Knowledges Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities and limitations of medium to heavy equipment used in the area of assignment.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of heavy equipment.
Thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
Skill in manipulating the controls of maintenance equipment.
Skill and care in the operation of several types of medium to heavy equipment.
Ability to perform equipment operational duties in the area of assigned responsibility.
Ability to train lower skilled employees and to provide leadership to a small crew in assigning tasks and insuring work quality.
Ability to make minor repairs to equipment.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to make simple records of work activity.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the general public.
Ability to keep simple records of work activities.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or 20 pounds constantly.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate heavy equipment and distinguish details and differences in grading streets as well as for safety issues and to read instruction and prepare simple records.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and experience in the operation of equipment related to the areas of assignment including some maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirement
Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license.
Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
