SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
School Crossing Guards are under the general and direct supervision of the Captain of the Patrol Division. This position is a not-sworn position within the organizational structure of the Department. School Crossing Guards work with children and must be able to relate to them.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
School Crossing Guards are to take every precaution to see that all children are assisted across the roadways at their particular posts. The employee is expected to have a general understanding of the work and knows the importance of being at their post in a timely manner. Work performed is evaluated through observation, conferences and quality and effectiveness of work completed.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
Assist children across the street at school crossing
Be at the assigned school crossing at the specified time
Report any absences to the Captain of the Patrol Division
Maintain a professional attitude and proper dress while on the job
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Requires knowledge of procedures used in working a school crossing
Ability to deal with the public, particularly children
Ability to direct and control traffic situations at school crossings
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform basic life operational functions of standing, walking, hearing, reaching, feeling, grasping, pushing and pulling and perform repetitive motions.
Must be able to stand and/or walk for prolonged periods of time up to include 1 hour time frame to maintain the posted position of a crossing guard.
